Mask Standard: ATSM F 2100

ASTM F2100: 2021 is a standard specification for performance of materials used in medical face masks. The standard was developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and outlines the requirements for materials, testing, performance, and labeling of medical face masks.

l   Filtration Efficiency: The filtration efficiency of standard tested masks during the testing process, including Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) and Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE).

  1. Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE): the mask's ability to filter bacteria from the air. ASTM F2100 requires a minimum BFE of 95%.
  2. Particulate filtration efficiency (PFE): the mask's ability to filter particles from the air. ASTM F2100 requires a minimum PFE of 95%.

l   Pressure Drop: The pressure difference generated by standard tested masks during breathing, usually used to evaluate the mask's breathability and comfort.

  • Fluid resistance: the mask's ability to resist fluid penetration, which is important for preventing contamination during procedures. ASTM F2100 specifies different levels of fluid resistance, ranging from low to high.

l   Flammability: The reaction of standard tested masks when exposed to flame to ensure their effective protection against fire during use.

  • The mask's resistance to catching fire. ASTM F2100 specifies a maximum flame spread time of 3.5 seconds

l   Breathability: the mask's ability to allow air to pass through while maintaining its filtration efficiency. ASTM F2100 specifies maximum allowable differential pressure, which is a measure of the mask's breathability.

l   Surface Protection: The protective performance of the surface of standard tested masks against blood and other liquids to ensure their effective protection against droplets and liquids during use.

l   Water Absorption: The water absorption of the material of standard tested masks to ensure its effective protection against liquids during use.

Medical face masks that meet the requirements of ASTM F2100 are considered to provide a high level of protection for healthcare professionals and patients during medical procedures. The standard is regularly updated to reflect advancements in materials and technology.
